After several months of scouring the country and taking account of the views of beer and cider drinkers who have attended previous events, the organisers of Newquay Beer Festival have just unveiled their line up of real ales and ciders for 2017.
50 real ale and 20 ciders will give drinkers a wide choice and there are also two pump lagers and a sparkling cider on offer with wine and soft drinks plus food and the usual great line-up of music for the three days from Thursday 22 to Sunday 24 September.
Phil Bunt of Towan Blystra Lions Club, the event organisers, said: “We have tried to give a good balance for those visiting Cornwall who want to try some of our fantastic local brews and those from Cornwall who want to experience beers and ciders from elsewhere.”
19 of the real ales are from the county, as are five of the ciders, others come from as far away as Scotland and Wales. As usual there are some eye-catching and mouth-watering names to conjure with: ‘Old Legover’ (4.1% ABV) will be coming down from Yorkshire, ‘Motorhead Road Crew’ (4.5%) from Co. Durham, ‘Legless Jester’ (4.7%) is a Dorset ale and ‘Monty Python’s Holy Grail’ (4%) is another Yorkshire brew worth a taste.
Topping the pile in terms of strength will be Cornwall’s Firebrand brewery with their ‘Double IPA’ at 7.5%, while, also from the Duchy, Coastal’s ‘St Piran’s Porter’ (6%), Rebel Brewery’s Eighty Shilling’ (5%) and Keltek’s ‘Grim Reaper’ (6%) will give a similar experience. Skinners Brewery showcase several of their popular beers and also a range of ciders brewed by them under the Cornish Cider Company umbrella.
Amongst other ciders will be regular favourites like ‘Old Rosie’ (7.3%) and Black Rat Perry (7.5%) plus a several new ones to the festival including Snail Bank’s ‘Pineapple and Grapefruit’ (4%), Scotland’s Thistly Cross cider, ‘Whisky Cask’ (6.9%, and Celtic Cider’s ‘Tutti Fruity’.
“We are very grateful to the Maharajah Indian Restaurant, Impact Sound and Light and Hendra Holiday Park for their continued support for this charity event,” added Phil.
“In particular it’s been fantastic that so many businesses and individuals have also sponsored beers and ciders. A big thank you to them all.”
